My work at POEM Technologies
POEM technologies is a small home monitoring systems company based in Long Island, NY. POEM technologies specialized in advanced online oil tank monitoring systems for both residential and commercial applications when I joined as an Engineering Intern in May 2021. These systems conducted regular assessments of oil tank levels, enabling users to effortlessly monitor their levels through a user-friendly online platform. My main tasks included testing product quality and durability, developing a new project utilizing TOF distance sensor and Arduino, and participating in business meetings.
At POEM Technologies, I worked on enhancing oil monitoring systems, focusing on both indoor and outdoor models that used pressure-based measurements. I analyzed battery life to recommend the optimal battery for standalone units and identified issues with outdoor unit sealing that caused data transmission interruptions, leading to a redesign of the electronics casing. Additionally, I explored alternative oil level measurement methodologies, implementing a time-of-flight distance sensor with an Arduino Uno microcontroller and designing a compatible fixture using Fusion 360. My role also involved participating in business meetings, visiting distributors, interfacing with clients, and learning about the logistics and challenges of product development in a small business.
